FAQs about women’s touch rugby with the Chipstead Flames for those thinking about it but still not sure...

Q: What is touch rugby?
A: Fun and friendly rugby where a ‘tackle’ is made by lightly touching the player who has the ball.

Q: Will I get hurt?
A: No (but we can’t guarantee you won’t run into someone by accident or trip over your shoelaces) There is minimal contact and certainly no tackling like you see on TV - we’re a fun team, not professionals in the 6 Nations. Any roughness in a game will be penalised by the coach. Why not watch the team first and decide for yourself?

Q: When do you play?
A: Every Wednesday during school term time from 5:30-6:30

Q: Where do you play?
A: Chipstead Rugby Club. High Road, Chipstead CR5 3SB. The car park is about 100m south of the White Hart Pub

Q: Do I need to be fit?
A: No. Play to your own pace, you’ll naturally get fitter anyway. We’re a team of normal people, all sizes and shapes. You don’t need thighs like tree trunks for touch rugby, size and strength aren’t important.

Q: Do I need to have played rugby before?
A: Absolutely not. Most of the team had never picked up a rugby ball when we started.

Q: Do I need to know the rules of rugby?
A: No. Anything you need to know will be explained by the coaches. Touch rugby is a lot simpler than full contact rugby, by the end of the first session we promise you’ll know what you’re doing

Q: Do I need football/rugby boots? What do I wear?
A: Trainers and comfortable clothes are all you need. It can get a bit blustery at the club so bring warm clothes just in case.

Q: Do I have to come every week?
A: It would be great if you can make it every week but we know people have commitments. Turn up when you can, and you’ll be just as welcome as anyone else

Q: What’s the commitment and what does it cost?
A: No commitment and there’s no cost (don’t tell the club committee!!) We’re looking to build up numbers and get people playing rugby, not make lots of money. If you stay for drinks afterwards you’ll be supporting the club anyway.

Q: Can I just give it a try to see if it’s for me or not?
A: Of course
